IMPORTANCE OF MARPOL
Marpol (Marine Pollution) is the International Convention for
the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of
1978. 73/78 refer to the years 1973 and 78.
Marpol is an important marine convention that deals with
marine pollution. One of the problems with marine pollution is that vast areas
of the oceans are not under control of any one country. This international
convention was administered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
owing to the increasing number of marine accidents such as oil spills and other
forms of pollution from ships in to the marine environment. There were two
treaties that were adopted for this cause; one in 1973 and the other in 1978,
followed by the Protocol of 1997 and Anexxes I, II, III, IV, V and VI.
